Fan-damn-tastic post. This is what riding is. Easy to get caught up reading product reviews, accounts of bikes that “want to climb”, better, faster, lighter, whatever, as if the bikes have some independent existence, like a car. But really, out there, it’s about the constant calculation of the team, the road, the bike, the traffic, and your body. Sometimes you get that calculation right, and it’s brilliant. Sometimes you get it wrong and it sucks. The uncertainty is part of the thrill. I don’t think I’ve ever read anything that’s made me want to get out and ride more. Thank you.

I had my Crown Jewel slip out from under me this winter so I empathize with you, and I wouldn’t worry about being the slowest rider the fact that you’re riding is what matters.

thanks for recounting your experiences, and I am so sorry for your accident! I wish I had known about this ride, I work about a mile from the velodrome. you really should have stopped at Premise Made down the street, homemade chocolate and ice cream, it would have made all the pain go away.
